Tempest Factory Sounds

Tempest-Downloads

Tempest Factory Program Banks

The downloadable files in the sidebar at the right contain factory projects and sounds for Tempest. There are two different sound sets to choose from:

  • The new Tempest sound set for OS 1.4
  • The original Tempest sound set for OS versions 1.0 – 1.3
IMPORTANT NOTE

The Tempest 1.4 sound set requires Tempest OS 1.4. If its not already installed, please install Tempest OS 1.4 before attempting to install the 1.4 sound set

These files include installation instruction, which are also given below. The program data is in a MIDI System Exclusive (SysEx) file. You will need a DAW, MIDI utility, or other application capable of opening and sending MIDI System Exclusive (SysEx) messages. MIDI-OX (Windows) and SysEx Librarian (Mac OS) are shareware MIDI utilities that can reliably be used to update DSI instruments.

You will also need either a USB cable (Type A to Type B connectors, like a typical USB printer cable) or a MIDI interface to transmit the SysEx file from your computer to the Tempest.

You will find instructions for updating using MIDI-OX and SysEx Librarian below.

COMPATIBILITY OF OS 1.4 SOUND SET WITH OLDER  OS VERSIONS

Tempest’s internal file format has changed with OS version 1.4. This affects project and beat compatibility with older versions of the OS. Please be aware of the following before you update your Tempest to OS 1.4:

  • Projects and Beats made on previous OS versions will load and play correctly on OS 1.4.
  • If Projects and Beats made on a pre-1.4 OS are modified and saved, or exported from a Tempest with OS 1.4, they will NOT be compatible with a Tempest with a pre-1.4 OS.
  • If Projects and Beats made on a pre-1.4 OS are NOT modified and saved, or exported from Tempest with OS 1.4, they will still be compatible with a Tempest with a pre-1.4 OS (if you downgrade your Tempest OS to an older version, for example).

If there is a chance that you might use your current, pre-OS 1.4 Projects and Beats on a Tempest with an older OS, export and back them up before you upgrade to OS 1.4.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Be aware that the Tempest has a limit of 650 sound program locations. When loading new sounds to your existing setup, be aware that it is possible that you could run out of available sound program memory, receive an error code, and have to delete some files to make room for the new content. If you have sounds you want to keep, be sure to save them to a SysEx file first.

Refer to your Tempest manual for more information about backing up files by initiating a SysEx dump from the Tempest’s front panel controls.

LOADING PROGRAMS FROM WINDOWS USING MIDI-OX

Before starting, close all other audio or MIDI or DAW software, and disconnect all other MIDI devices. If necessary, download and install MIDI-OX.

http://www.midiox.com/

To prepare the Tempest to receive system exclusive messages:

  1. Decide if you’re going to update via the MIDI jacks or USB.
  2. Press the System button on the Tempest and navigate to the “MIDI: SysEx IN+OUT Cable” option.
  3. Select either “MIDI” (for the MIDI jacks) or “USB.”
  4. Connect your computer to the Tempest using either a USB cable or a MIDI interface, depending on which of these you have chosen in the steps above.
NOTE

Tempest can only be updated via USB after Main OS version 1.2 is installed. If your Main OS reads less than 1.2, you’ll need to update via the MIDI jacks first.

If using USB, the Tempest is a Class Compliant USB device. That means it does not require any additional drivers to be installed to communicate with your computer. It will appear in MIDI-OX and other MIDI applications as a MIDI port named “Tempest” (Under Windows XP, it will appear as “USB Audio Device.”)

If using a MIDI interface, connect the computer’s MIDI out to the Tempest’s MIDI in. Depending on the type of interface, you may also need a MIDI cable.

Most MIDI interfaces or sound cards with built-in MIDI interfaces will work. However, we have received reports that Digidesign/Avid interfaces and Native Instruments Maschine may not transmit SysEx correctly for updates. The M-Audio Uno is an inexpensive, reliable, and widely available MIDI interface for use when updating our instruments.

To load a SysEx file:

  1. Run MIDI-OX.
  2. From the Options menu, choose “MIDI Devices.”
  3. In the lower left quadrant of the window, select the MIDI port to which the instrument is connected. If connected via USB, choose “Tempest” (or “USB Audio Device” under Windows XP). If connected via MIDI, choose the MIDI interface. The selected MIDI port appears in the Port Mappings window.
  4. Click OK to close the dialog and save the settings.
  5. From the View menu, choose “SysEx.”
  6. From the SysEx menu, choose “Configure.”
  7. Set the Low Level Output Buffers “Num” and “Size” to 1024.
  8. Under Output Timing, make sure that “Auto-adjust Buffer Delays if necessary” is NOT enabled and that “Delay After F7” IS enabled.
  9. Set Delay Between Buffers to 375 Milliseconds and Delay After F7 to 1000 milliseconds.
  10.  Click OK to close the dialog and save the settings.
  11. From the Command Window menu, choose “Load File.” Browse to and open the SysEx file.
  12. From the Command Window menu, choose “Send SysEx.” The programs will increment on the Tempest as each program file is transferred to it.

LOADING PROGRAMS FROM A MAC USING SYSEX LIBRARIAN

Before starting, close all other audio or MIDI or DAW software, and disconnect all other MIDI devices. If necessary, download and install SysEx Librarian.

  2. From the SysEx Librarian menu, choose “Preferences.”
  3. In the General tab, set “Pause between played messages” to 1 second.
  4. Close the SysEx Librarian Preferences window to save changes.
  5. Choose your MIDI interface from the “Destination” menu.
  6. Click Add/+ to add the file to the file list or simply drag and drop the file on the open SysEx Librarian window. The file name appears in the file list and should be highlighted.
  7. Click Play. The programs will increment on the Tempest as each program file is transferred to it.
