Gene Paul Gayol

Gene Paul Gayol is a songwriter, composer, producer, keyboardist and has participated in Latin Grammy & Golden Globe winning projects. He has also performed or recorded with Platinum & Grammy award-winning recording artists. More recently GP’s keyboards can be heard in the Disney film Encanto.

Avenoir, a band made together with his friends during the pandemic, released their debut record New Year’s Day 2022 and features the Prophet-6 & vintage Prophet-5 synthesizers.

We chatted with GP on how he uses Sequential instruments in his music:

What made you choose the Prophet-6?

Ever since I first came across the Prophet-6 I was impressed by it’s warmth and character while at the same time being the perfect utility synth. To me it felt ‘alive’ and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on one.

How are you using it?

Whether in production or for live, I heavily rely on the Prophet-6 for creating lush, complex pads, fat bass lines, and synth leads that can cut through in a mix. When playing live, for a reaction, I love recording into the sequencer, playing the sequence back and messing with it as I go for get-weird-freak-out moments! Always gets smiles from everyone on the bandstand.

What is one of your favorite things about it?

It’s hard to narrow down to one thing but for me it’s the accessibility to getting good sounds dialed in quickly. I find that everything is a twist of a knob or press of a button away– no need for menu-diving.

Any interesting tricks or techniques you would like to share?

Plenty of tips and tricks have been already covered on the Prophet-6, I would just suggest not being afraid of experimenting- that’s the invitation I feel the P6 extends. All of a sudden you’re adding distortion via the dedicated knob to add a little hair on that sound you’re perfecting… why not! Just have fun and explore.
